Headaches Q & A

Pacific MD

What are headaches?

Headaches are very common and range from a temporary problem that may be related to muscle tension or stress to persistent headaches that hamper your day-to-day activities.

The mechanics that cause headaches are simple on the inside, but the causes on the outside are anything but. Headaches occur when signals between your brain, blood vessels, and neighboring nerves trigger a pain reaction in the nerves of your head muscles and blood vessels. The causes for headaches are vast and can be rooted in everything from illness to depression.

What are the most common headaches?

The most common headaches are:

  • Tension headaches
  • Migraines
  • Sinus headaches
  • Hormone headaches
  • Cluster headaches
  • Acute headaches

Dr. Abdarbashi and Dr. Anmangandla treat all headaches and specializes in migraines and sinusitis.

What is sinusitis?

Sinusitis headaches are characterized by a deep and dull ache in the following areas:

  • Cheekbones
  • Forehead
  • Bridge of the nose

Sinus headaches are a result of inflammation in your sinus cavities and are often accompanied by a runny nose, swelling in the face, a feeling of stuffiness in the ears, and fever.

Dr. Abdarbashi and Dr. Anmangandla typically treat this painful condition by tackling the sinus infection.

What causes migraine headaches?

Migraine headaches are characterized by a pounding or throbbing, usually on one side of the head, that can last hours or days. Chronic sufferers of migraines may get these headaches several times a month. Along with the headache, migraine sufferers may also experience:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Stomach pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Dizziness or blurred vision

The causes of migraine headaches are not completely understood, but are thought to include:

  • Environmental factors
  • Genetic factors
  • The existence of certain medical conditions.
  • Chemical imbalances in the brain
  • Changes in hormone levels, especially in menopause
  • Foods and drinks
  • Stress
  • Medication
  • Sensory stimuli
  • Sleep patterns
  • Physical activity

If you suffer from migraine headaches, make an appointment at Pacific MD to find the cause of the problem and get started on an appropriate treatment plan.
